Our Submission Guidelines

1:  Before you consider us to handle your publishing needs you need to understand what we accept. We publish fiction and nonfiction books on a variety of subjects with emphasis on science fiction, fantasy, vampire fiction, mythology, philosophy, history, historical romance and adventure. From time to time we may publish children's books and graphic novels. At this time we are not accepting poetry books for the near future. If you want to get published in that genre you can use the Google or Yahoo search engines to locate publishers of poetry and experimental prose.

♦ 2: We do not publish pornography or sexually explicit books. In most cases the sex depicted in our books is incident to the plot and is not offered with gratuitous intent. If there is sex involved we make sure that there is a warning attached to the book's copyright page and our site's description. Books containing excessive profane language and adult sexual situations of any preference will be rejected without discussion.

♦ 3: If you have a book which fits our genre specifications and you have already self-published, or have an ebook to list, we will be happy to consider adding it to our backlist for sale on our site. We require only a 10% commission on the markup or royalty you expect to earn from the sale. In all cases we would require a sample to examine.

♦ 4: We offer basic editing advice and a review for a small fee on a sliding scale of $.005 to $.001 per word, depending on the size of the manuscript and the time it takes to read and proof it. The minimum fee is $25. A manuscript of 25,000 words would cost $75, 50,000 words would cost $100, 100,000 words would cost $100, and so on. The review may be good or bad depending on the quality of the book. If the author makes the corrections necessary, we will create a second review for free, submit it to book review sites, and publish a link to the author's site on our site for free.

To submit a manuscript for review, we prefer a Word document file or WinZip file attached to an e-mail sent to: submissions@ikthalionpress.com with a cover letter and short bio; with the subject line "Submitting For Review"; or a formatted CD-RW in the mail in lieu of the physical manuscript with a cover letter and short bio, sent to:

If you send a printed copy you must include return postage if you want the book returned. In all cases please state the number of words along with your name, address and email address in your query letter.

♦ 5: We are not accepting submissions for publishing at this time due to the volume of our existing projects.♦ We are not accepting cover illustrations at this time. Unsolicited submissions of artwork for this purpose will not be returned.

♦ 6: What we require if we were to publish your manuscript: Your manuscript must be formatted to fit a basic 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper and the typeface must be Arial, Palatino or Times Roman. You may use bold type or italics where necessary. Your margins cannot be less than 1" all the way around. We prefer the manuscript text to be justified and it must be double spaced for comments and editing if necessary. Your manuscript must also be free of spelling and grammatic mistakes, except within quotes for conveying accents, inflections or dramatic effect, and must not contain text messaging shortcuts of any kind. Be sure that you have edited and polished your manuscript as far as possible before submitting. If there are illustrations to be included, the interior art must be in black and white or grayscale and embedded in the document file. The reason for this is that our printer cannot handle full color without the book costing more. If you still want your book published in color you will be notified what it will cost and you will be obligated to absorb the difference in cost no matter what format you use.

When you submit your project, we will email you with a statement detailing the cost outlay and our commission requirements. We work with print on demand, which means that single books can be ordered as well as a boxful. We will make sure that you have a proof copy in hand before anything else is transacted. No work will be performed until we are paid. We accept PayPal for all transactions.

♦ 7: You retain all rights to your work. An author's copyright begins the moment he/she is finished writing the book. We honor that and make no claim to ownership of the copyright. If you want to be distributed through our channels, or separately, you must own an ISBN. You can obtain one through Bowker or through us. We offer Lulu's Published by You package for $99.95, which includes the ISBN, a bar code and also access to our distribution channels. In all cases the application for an ISBN will include your name and contact information as the rights owner. We can also present your book for sale without one, but this means the only market you would have is our site in addition to your own. If you have other sources for selling that do not require one, your contracted relationship would be restricted to them also. All booksellers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Waterstones, and others, require a book to have an ISBN before they will sell it.

We will set up your book to be published through our imprint (Ikthalion Press), or your own. If you want to save time you can go direct to Lulu where you can get information to publish your own book without our help.

Thanks for your interest, and good luck with your career!
